Emily! A notification led me to this beautiful list by you (several of the books I also love dearly or admire are on it - Bird by Bird, Drive Your Plough, No One is Talking About This. So to have my own book spoken of by you in this way - well, it means a lot. Thank you.

I think you know already about my free writing project here on Substack? All the monthly themes stay open without deadline for your own true tales and I then curate all the pieces over on the book's website. This is where you can see what others have already written...

All the very best for the holidays and the new year. And hope you enjoy your Substack experience as much as I have been. I'm not going to delete Twitter or Instagram, but will be on them a lot less - this platform is where I feel I'm finding more interesting new writing now, and having better conversations...

Hello Tanya! I was aware of the space you linked to, but haven't explored it properly yet, I shall definitely do that once things settle down over the next few days.

I'm definitely enjoying my Substack experience so far; just the commitment to a once a week post has held me to account and helped things flow a little better than usual. I'm also not quite ready to quit instagram, I only wish I had a better handle on my compulsive scrolling!

Thanks for your comment, and your wonderful book, it really did make quite an impact on me.

I look forward to seeing what you create next.

Take care,

Emily x

I have read 6, 9 and 10. And also loved them all. 6 was one of my favourites from maybe last year. I can't remember. And the year I read Elizabeth Strout was the same as I tore through all of them! Love her style and the setting that I can see in all her books. Thank you for this list. Some new ones for me to dive into!

There really is something about her writing that I don't see anywhere else. Don't know if you have seen it, but I really enjoyed the TV adaptation of Olive Kitteridge with Frances McDormand.

Have a wonderful festive period, hope the work on the book goes easily for you!x

I agree on that! And I can't put my finger on what it is! The subject matter of her books wouldn't usually interest me that much but somehow she does amazing character work, as well as description of place...I must read other people's reviews and see how they articulate it.

YES, I did see the TV adaptation. I also really liked it even though Olive was inevitably different in my head. But I thought Frances McD did it really well and the casting is probably as close as they could have got. I mean, she's an amazing actress. It reminds me I would like to watch it again, thank you!

(I am a bit scared of watching the new Crawdads film though, as I loved the book so much and the imagery was so clear. I don't think it could possibly meet my expectations. haha)

Have a wonderful festive period too! May we both get the words we need! xx
